Variables List
The variables list helps admins understand which message variables are available before using them in presets or automation.
What variables are for
Variables let one message template adapt to the affected service, component, Beat, or Beat Group.
For example, a preset can mention the affected service without hard-coding that service name into every message.
When to use the variables list
Use the variables list when you are:
- writing incident presets
- writing maintenance presets
- configuring Beat message templates
- checking how hierarchy names appear in messages
- teaching operators which variables are safe to use
Preview before publishing
Before relying on a variable in customer-facing copy:
- Choose representative affected components.
- Preview the variable output.
- Confirm the rendered text reads naturally.
- Adjust the preset if the output feels unclear.
Variables are only as clear as the hierarchy names behind them.
